I wonder who wrote the book of love

As Valentine’s Day winds down I have a few thoughts on the subject…

I wrote about my feeling for this day a couple of years ago:

https://suek2001.wordpress.com/2013/02/14/this-is-just-a-thursday-to-me/

Still, it’s a few years later and there’s more to add to this…

First off, I will state upfront I am not a big fan of this holiday….and I never understood why it exists…and it’s hard enough to be single and then have it rubbed in your face for a day makes it almost unbearable…

I do think this holiday does a great disservice for women…the advertisers and marketing companies have done a great job of manipulating the image of women on this day…

Women are complex…as any male stand up comic will tell you…and I will very rarely speak for all women..Kent Nerburn once said “Each woman is their own country..with nuances..traditions and areas to explore that differ from others”…

So, why do the marketers insist on thinking that all women want for Valentine’s Day is jewelry or chocolates?

They are the ones that spend millions of dollars convincing women to hate their own bodies…and the only way to love them is to buy their skin products..their hand creams…and their weight loss plans…and eating chocolate does nothing but make you need more skin creams and weight loss…(a collusion maybe?)

The perception that women are fragile creatures that need all these things to build up our self esteem is crazy..and it gets worse around this day…

So, the only way a guy can make any kind of impression is to buy women jewelry, flowers or chocolate…

That makes women sound artificial and greedy..we are so much more than that..and to push that ideal further drives us apart…

So, let’s honestly take a look at why…because the only way Madison Avenue works is to get at our desire for acceptance..Guys want to be accepted by their gals..and gals want to be accepted by their guys…but it’s worse for women..it’s not just accepted..they want to be valued….

So, the value of a woman is tied to marketing..and the social stigma of those who aren’t valued continues…while the companies continue to roll in the dough of our insecurities…

I am not anti-love..not anti-Valentine’s day..but both concepts have been so screwed over by society, it’s hard to tell what’s real anymore…

…even this day is not about cupid..heart..or love..it’s Catholic Feast Celebrating St. Valentine:

(from WIKIPEDIA)

“All that is reliably known of the saint commemorated on February 14 is his name and that he was martyred and buried at a cemetery on the Via Flaminia close to the Milvian bridge to the north of Rome on that day.”

—the entry is rather long..this was just a bullet point..Here’s the whole entry:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Valentine#Valentine.27s_Day

So, real love is showing someone you care…every day…and showing they have value…not through flowers..not through candy..but by actions…selfless actions…and most of all, showing the love of Christ through prayers and obedience to His commands….

For Christ is the highest love we can strive for..to have not just for ourselves..but to give to others…For in His command of loving one another..we can make Valentine’s Day be an every day activity…and change the world…
