Hiding and selling our light…

My mind is whirl of anger…sadness and confusion…and it’s over something totally not in my control…

So, I turn to blog..to write out what is bothering me…and try to make sense of it all..

It all started yesterday with this article:

http://www.startribune.com/pohlads-to-launch-new-hip-hop-station-go-95-3-on-tuesday/364123681/

I could have sworn that my alma mater, North Central owned that station..apparently, it sold the station a year ago to some Christian conglomerate…

I’ll give them credit for at least trying to give it some spiritual heft in the process of lining their pocketbooks but it still makes me angry…

The station KNOF was bequeathed to my alma mater….the giver was someone who was a strong faith..and ran a small Mom and Pop Gospel station…

The key word..it was a gift….and the school had it for years…didn’t use it but just broadcast gospel programming..

When I went to North Central University, I worked and helped manage the campus radio station….On a clear day, the dorms across the street could receive it on their radios..

Now, to be given that kind of mass media access and not do a thing with it for the school..for the music ministry..use it to broadcast pastoral classes…or even as a recruitment tool for the school…it was a giant waste of what God had given them…

I say all this as a relative outsider..I have no knowledge of what was discussed at the meetings of how best to use that station…

I’m just saying from a common sense perspective..it seemed like a waste…

So, the school sold the station to a Christian conglomerate…and in an interesting deal:

—“KNOF was sold to Praise Broadcasting effective October 17, 2014 for $5 million. However, nearly eleven months later, Praise Broadcasting announced on September 24, 2015, that it sold KNOF to Northern Lights Broadcasting in exchange for moving the format to the HD2 sub channel of Northern Lights’ KTWN, along with a five year sponsorship deal with the Minnesota Twins for “Faith Night” from 2016 to 2020 and to use Target Field for Praise FM’s annual concerts in 2016 and 2017.”

So, let’s see..the Gospel station gets demoted and then gets a sponsorship of Twins games…and use of Target Field….

Meanwhile the masses outside of those “Faith Nights” will be receiving more negative stereotypes about women, men…and race….and all because a Christian company got greedy and was all about marketing itself…

Don’t get me wrong..I am not saying that hip hop does not deserve to be heard….I just think the message of Christ has been diluted to a point where the Bible is an afterthought to the culture of Christianity…

I find it sad that Minneapolis is a city on edge..and racism is being addressed in the public square…and yet, at a time when the Church should step up and show  and BE the light of Christ, it has chosen to close itself off and market to the culture of suburban Christians who want to live in the bubble that the modern Church and modern Bible Colleges provide…

So, with this move. the Church has allowed the airwaves to be flooded with images of violence, misogyny..and despair…all for what? Money or prestige? What? Someone explain this to me because I am lost on what the Church will gain..

Matthew 5:15:

—-“Neither do men light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that are in the house.”–ASV

The Church had a chance to BE the change..to BE the Light…and it decided to hide it under a bushel..Yes, there are other Christian stations out there..and they will reach but each time something like this happens…we lose a bit of our soul…our purpose…and we lose a bit of Christ in ourselves…

Our world is a dark and horrible place…and we ARE the Light..we show love, encouragement and joy..not just to EACH other..but to the world…

It’s nice that we love out neighbors when they are our brothers and sisters in Christ..but it’s another level of the Gospel to love the World and want to IMPACT the world…

Praise FM not only hid it’s light under the bushel…it SOLD it’s bushel to the highest bidder..and we may never see that Light again…

All these thoughts were running through my head as this song popped into my head…the song speaks to the commercialism of Christianity….and was written in 1985 by Steve Taylor..

Sad to say, some things in the Church don’t change….God Have mercy..
