In a world…filled with predictable movie trailers..one blog dares to…

I saw “American Sniper” today….a movie that I am still pondering…Great film but the message was complex…so I shall leave that for another day…

The thing that amused me was the never ending stream of trailers right before it..I will admit I am a geek for those..and I am one of those people that yells out after each one “Wow…that’s good”..or “Come on..Really?’

I’ve noticed trailers of movies have the same potboiler tendencies…

Action movies that are not sequels:

Main, male..type A actor..usually white…has to stand in the center of whatever is going on and then turn around and look ponderous…swirling music or metal cover of an old rock tune…

All the action flies by..guns…cops…military…space ships….rain…whatever might be in our hero’s way…all swirls around the lead…and then the action slows..as two or three people yell at action hero “No, you can’t do that. You’ll die”….followed be a female yelling, “You have to save us..our world needs help!!!!!!”…and don’t forget the black sidekick that utters snappy insults and sage advice to Type A White, Male hero…

More swirling action..pounding drums…emo cover of an 80’s tune…and in the midst of action is always a guy undressing a half-naked woman…or caressing..or many women in bikinis strutting on the beach unaware disaster is moments away….

..and then the names of the actors..bold on the screen..one by one….

..and the title of the movie…”The Last Plumber in Des Moine”..Coming March…or some such nonsense…

Other movies have the same kind of trailers..romantic comedies are the worst..as you know when you hear that earnest sing-songy voice say “She was a hard working dietician not looking for love..He was an orthodontist with his hands full of teeth…together, they will realize that the leaves on the trees spell L-O-V-E…Coming Soon, “A Smile to Savor”…cue Kelly Clarkson single released especially for this motion picture…

At some point, movie studios must realize that their trailers are so generic and forgettable, they are not working….American Sniper’s trailer was different..gritty…attention grabbing…it didn’t play the action card..or even the war-is-for heroes card but a story of a man that served his country…and that movie has made well over $200 million dollars…

At this point, all the trailers make me want to say is “Yeah, I’ll wait for it to come to Netflix”…and with that, theatres are dying a painful death….

It’s been said for years that Hollywood has run out of ideas…at least their trailers could make you think they still have some creative juices…With the ones I saw today, I highly doubt that…

..and what’s worse, I could only recall the title of one of the four…..and that’s because it had an actor who is now dead…

..and that’s the impression Hollywood wants us to have?

At least, there were no trailers for Taken with Liam Neeson…He was in one but I forgot the name of the movie…Well done marketing..well done..
