A New Year-A New Blog!

It’s 2010 already?

My..where does the decade go? Technically, we have one year left in the decade but I’m still not sure how to wrap up the whole decade in thought. The Sixties were a time of change…The 70’s were a time of liberation……the 80’s were the time of decadance..the 90’s were the time of grunge and what shall we say about this last decade?

All I can think of is fear…..Septmeber11, 2001 set the tone for the decade. Whatever cocoon we had wrapped  for ourselves we came out of on that date. From then on, we lived in fear. Yeah, guilty pleasure pop culture moments abounded but fear was what drove us into war..and maybe into the whole Climate Change crisis. We even had the fear of illness for a time..bird flu and swine flu. It seems we never could shake our sense of doom as a whole. Christianity really didn’t offer a lot of peace this decade either.  It offered self-satisfaction via several different preachers and political salvation  through various candidates. That Peace that passes all understanding eluded of us as we watched our world get darker. Then at the close of the decade, there seemed to be hope…Change we could believe in….in the form of a bi-racial presidential candidate..and millions of Americans bought into the dream and now we realize, it’s the same nightmare with different leadership. The fear of being homeless..the fear of being jobless or without career direction..or the fear of someone blowing up a plane, shooting up a courthouse or whatever evil strikes in the hearts of men.

So where do we go from here? How do we climb out from under this fear? We trust God and we learn to trust each other somehow. This world will not get better when a health care bill passes. It will not get better when we take our shoes off at an airport. It starts with the greatest commandment we have been given, “This is my commandment that you love one another, that your joy may be full”.

I am blessed that I have good friends and a great church and I live in a neighborly town in Minnesota. I have seen the light of joy and peace firsthand when we help each other, console each other and encourage each other through the dark times.  It may not get you a job or protect you from terror or even provide a home but it will remind you of why there is still joy in the world.

I think my New Years Resolution is to watch the news a bit less and take care of my neighbors a bit more…and listen to more  John Denver music. I think we could all use a bit more of that.

Peace be unto all of you,
